I rewatched the first four episodes of Lost last night, and I thought Locke's character was very different than the clueless Locke in later episodes, in fact, he kinda freaked me out...Especially after the season 5 finale.
During the episode 'Walkabout' he sees the monster, it doesn't kill him. And this is the episode Jack sees his dead father standing on the beach, looking at him.
At the end of the episode, he goes to follow his father into the jungle, and who comes out? Locke. Really reminded me of the season five episode 'Dead is Dead' where Ben tells Sun she might want to go inside because what's about to come out of the jungle he can't control, and then Locke comes walking out of the jungle.
And then when Locke came strolling back into camp with a dead boar, similar to when he came walking into the others' beach camp in 'Follow the Leader'.
I'm not saying Locke is the smoke monster, but he did have that drawing as a child of it. Maybe the 'Man in Black' chose people, just as Jacob chose people. Maybe they both chose Locke, and he could have gone either way, being a leader of the others, and working for Jacob, or being manipulated and used as a loop hole by the Man in Black.

I had read a theory that there are two smoke monsters, and one is the black smoke the other is white, and when I was watching the Pilot episode, it does kinda look like there are two in the trees near the beach fighting. That would be pretty cool I think, one is the Man in Black, the other Jacob. And they can take the form of people.

Oh, I can't remember what episode it was, I think it was 'Tabula Rasa' where the group that went to try to find a radio signal is sitting around the fire at night, Sawyer called Sayid 'Al Jazeera' and Charlie says 'you know, Al Jazeera is a network' I started laughing so hard. I remembered the Fox News people all got their underwear in a bind when Al Jazeera was going to start broadcasting in English in the US, that it was a terrorist news site and all that...
And then Hurley is asking Jack if he saw the monster, and wanted to know if it was a dinosaur, I laughed at that too.

I also have to say, there were references to time. I remember when we were first watching and I told my husband 'They're time traveling!' Him, my mom and sister all thought I flipped my lid.

My original theory was that the plane had passed through a worm hole into a parallel dimension or into another time. My mom and sister kept saying that's too far out there and that they're all dead and in purgatory with a dinosaur. My husband just thought they crashed on deserted island with a polar bear.

What were your original theories about the show, if you're watching, or did watch at one time...My sister gave up on it during season 2...For shame.
Now I need to go pick up a lamb at the halal meat market...

You KNOW I love this post!

"My mom and sister kept saying that's too far out there and that they're all dead and in purgatory with a dinosaur. "

Yea because THAT makes total sense! haha

At the pilot I thought it was just an show about stranded people then the monster started all the scifi ideas.

It's really such a good show, just from those few parts you mentioned and I think you are on to something about John and Smokey.

I can't wait for season 6 but I also don't want it to end. But it better be a good ending!!

I see reruns on a channel here that are in season 3 and its always interesting to see stuff in hindsight now!

Exactly! They were sure it was a dinosaur.

Me too, I can't wait for season 6, but at the same time I don't want it to end either!
And you know, they better give us more Jacob, if they don't, after all these seasons and that's it, I'll be so mad. He's on my favorite character list, after just that one episode.
Oh, and they better give us a Richard episode!
